Manager, Data Science - (Global Discovery, Search Ranking)

Job Description

We are on the lookout for a Manager, Data Science to join the Search Ranking team on our journey to always deliver amazing experiences.

Science is at the core of our services, using Machine Learning and AI to create truly personalized recommendations, decode our customers’ queries and intent, learn to rank our search results, and create semantic matching. All of that for a diverse set of languages like Spanish, Arabic, English, Mandarin, or Korean. Since our algorithms run on a grand scale with thousands of requests per minute, deploying and operating Machine Learning algorithms under strict latency and robustness constraints is core to creating impact with our research.

Your Mission:

• Lead our Search Ranking team, focusing on driving the precision of our search and ensuring that results are tailored to the customer by being highly contextual and personally relevant.
• Nurture an existing high-performing squad (4-7 Data Scientists). You will be a role model of Delivery Hero's leadership principles, responsible for your team's ongoing growth, development, and engagement, while cultivating an inclusive culture of scientific excellence and continuous learning.
• Drive Strategic Alignment: Work very closely with Product Managers to build joint roadmaps that successfully execute on core product initiatives while dedicating space for scientific innovation.
• Champion Productionization: Guide your team to bring models as close to production as possible using our existing MLOps and Data Engineering tools. You will ensure your team understands system limitations at our scale (latency, robustness, DevOps, monitoring) and collaborates closely with engineering counterparts early in the lifecycle to prevent late-stage deployment blockers.
• Accelerate Agentic Development: Advocate for and nurture the use of agentic tools and AI assistants (e.g., Claude Code) across the data science lifecycle. You will empower your team to leverage these technologies to increase engineering velocity, streamline workflows, and elevate the overall quality of our solutions.
• Act as a strong collaborator who willingly crosses domain and functional boundaries, fostering close relationships with our recommendation teams and engineering counterparts to jointly manage dependencies and maximize business impact.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership. You maintain the technical depth of at least a Senior Data Scientist, allowing you to actively support your team in model evaluation, architecture discussions, and code reviews.

Qualifications

• You have a Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent practical industry experience.
• You have experience leading a data science team specifically within the search or recommendation domain (2+ years in leadership roles).
• You have solid practical experience with Learning-to-Rank (L2R), personalization science, and modern AI/ML techniques.
• Strong coding skills in Python and SQL, coupled with practical experience using modern MLOps frameworks (e.g., Metaflow, MLflow, model monitoring tools) to operate models in high-throughput, low-latency environments.
• An adaptable leader who thrives in ambiguity, capable of translating complex product objectives into well-defined technical solutions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with a proven ability to listen, build consensus, and influence stakeholders beyond your immediate team.

Nice to Have:

• Publication record in relevant top-tier conferences (e.g., SIGIR, RecSys, KDD) or strong contributions to the data science community.
• Previous experience operating search or recommendation systems in e-commerce, two-sided marketplaces, or food delivery contexts.
• Demonstrated experience integrating LLMs and agentic workflows into traditional machine learning lifecycles.
