Graduate Data Engineer

Locations: Berlin & London

We are looking for Graduate Data Engineers to support the projects and business development initiatives of the wider Oxera as a part of our Analytics and Data Science team.

Our Analytics and Data Science team specialises in the application of cutting-edge quantitative methods in Econometrics, Statistics, and Data Science. We leverage advanced methods to extract, transform, load and analyse data, delivering valuable insights to our clients through high quality outcomes and impactful narratives. We are an international team, and work across several geographies—wherever data-driven insights and innovative analytical approaches are needed.

Your role

As a Graduate Data Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting Oxera projects and business development initiatives across our products, sectors and geographies. You will be required to do the following.

• Collaborate closely with clients and colleagues, including IT, to build auditable, repeatable and efficient data pipelines in a compliant way, while adhering to best-practice in data security using local and cloud infrastructure.

• Collect data (for example using webscraping), clean, validate and maintain it, build unique datasets, make sure data is fit for purpose and adheres to highest quality standards.

• Develop and maintain documentation to make data accessible to colleagues.

• Support colleagues with embedding datasets and data tools within their projects regardless of the size and the type of data they need.

• Ensure project teams have access to high quality data throughout a project’s lifecycle.

• Participate in the activities of the Analytics and Data Science team as a member of its Data Engineering cluster. Engage with other clusters of the team, share your knowledge and learn from others.

About you

• A well-established understanding of building data pipelines and relevant frameworks and processes.

• Knowledge of data engineering solutions offered by MS Azure. Knowledge of other cloud frameworks is a plus.

• Knowledge of ETL processes using Databricks data engineering solutions is a plus. An excellent academic record, with an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a quantitative field, for example computer science or data science, with a significant focus on data engineering. If a relevant degree is not available, a proven track record of building data pipelines that enables reliable and well performing data delivery to relevant stakeholders is a must have.

• Strong problem solving abilities, analytical skills and a client focus.

• Knowledge of working with larger-than-memory datasets using cloud and local infrastructure, for example using Spark. Previous experience in this subject is a plus.

• Basic knowledge of supervised and unsupervised data science methods and their general data requirements is a plus.

• An interest in working on complex economic issues as part of a team of economists, econometricians or statisticians and data scientists in a multidisciplinary environment.

• Proficiency in using data wrangling frameworks in at least one of R (e.g. tidyverse, sparklyr) or Python (e.g. pandas, PySpark) is essential. If familiar with only one of these languages, an interest in learning the other is desirable. Familiarity with Stata and Excel is a plus.

• A keen eye for communicating empirical insights impactfully and an interest in transforming complex data sets or outcomes into visually appealing and easy-to-understand graphics, charts, and interactive dashboards, for example using Tableau, Power BI or R Shiny is a plus. Particularly, experience in using R Shiny to produce dashboards or web applications is advantageous.

• Highly motivated and committed team player with a curiosity for economics, econometrics, statistics and programming and a desire to learn about them.

• In addition to excellent spoken and written English, fluency in a different language, particularly in one of the languages of Oxera’s core geographies, is advantageous.
