Our Global Bank team is building the infrastructure behind SumUp's digital banking experience . Within this team, the Transfers Gateway squad plays a critical role in how money moves in and out of SumUp accounts. We power millions of transactions across SEPA and UK payment schemes, integrate with third-party banking partners, and ensure fast, secure, and compliant payment processing. From fraud prevention to system monitoring, we're focused on reliability at scale.

As a Senior Backend Engineer in our Transfers Gateway team, you'll design and scale distributed systems handling real-time payments across Europe. You'll lead technical discussions, own complex banking integrations, and drive improvements in performance, reliability, and observability. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you'll shape the future of our financial infrastructure and help small businesses move money with confidence.

What You'll Do

• Lead the design and implementation of reliable, high-scale integrations with SEPA and UK banking networks.
• Drive architectural discussions, shape the technical roadmap, and influence key design decisions.
• Improve system observability, test coverage, and operational excellence across our distributed systems.
• Take ownership of end-to-end delivery, from planning and coding to testing, monitoring, and rollout strategy.
• Collaborate with teams across Europe and Latin America to ensure seamless cross-border money movement.
• Share knowledge, uphold engineering best practices, and mentor others to raise the technical bar.

You'll Be Great for This Role If You Have…

• Solid experience as a senior backend engineer, using Golang, (Kotlin is a plus).
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, relational databases (like PostgreSQL).
• Experience using observability tools to proactively detect and troubleshoot issues.
• Experience with highly scalable, robust, and fault-tolerant systems.
• Good understanding of fundamental system architecture, design principles, data modelling, and API design (RESTful and event-driven services).
• Experience with CI/CD and version control systems like Git.
• Demonstrates exceptional code quality.
• A collaborative, product-focused mindset and are comfortable working with global cross-functional teams and owning outcomes.
• Curiosity and initiative, you are keen to learn, improve, and share knowledge to raise the bar for the whole team.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience in the fintech, payments or banking industry.
• Experience with Docker containers and Kubernetes. AWS, Grafana.
• Experience with Kafka.

Compensation: Starting from 5250 - 7500 Euro Gross / month + 2000 EUR Learning budget p/a + Virtual Stock Options (based on your competencies relevant for the job).
