UX/UI designer (m/f/x)
Cultural heritage data lives in databases, paper archives, books, and collections across the globe. But new digital tools can help connect those silos, encourage collaboration, and enhance transparency. NavigatingArt is a nonprofit organization that protects and promotes cultural heritage by empowering teams with the tools to create and publish digital catalogues raisonnés and archives.
We are seeking a highly analytical and technically adept UX/UI designer (m/f/x) to join NavigatingArt's product team. In this role, you will work alongside art domain experts and engineers to design precise, intuitive, and elegant interfaces that enable art professionals to explore, search, and navigate complex cultural heritage data from multiple sources. Your user-centered approach and ability to craft seamless features and flows will help make extensive and diverse datasets accessible for researchers and institutions worldwide.
By joining NavigatingArt, you’ll contribute to a meaningful and ambitious initiative that bridges technology and cultural heritage.
Tasks
- Lead design activities during the research and discovery phase, translating complex user needs into actionable design directions.
- Conduct and synthesize user research together with the product owner, engaging with art historians and institutional experts to understand workflows, search habits, and expectations.
- Develop user journeys, information architecture, and high-fidelity wireframes tailored toward real-world research scenarios.
- Design durable and elegant interfaces for data-driven exploration, search, and navigation across heterogeneous cultural heritage datasets.
- Build interactive prototypes in Figma to support iterative testing, stakeholder communication, and engineering alignment.
- Use analytical thinking to anticipate edge cases and design for data ambiguity, uncertainty, and nuanced user inputs common in cultural heritage research.
- Collaborate with the product owner and engineers to ensure design feasibility and smooth implementation, embedding UX best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain a design system and component library in Figma to ensure consistency across visual and functional elements.
- Maintain a consistent visual language by developing and documenting design systems and reusable components in Figma.
Requirements
- A degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Communication Design, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience demonstrated through a compelling portfolio.
- 2+ years of experience in UX/UI design for web-based products, ideally with a focus on information-rich and data-driven interfaces.
- Proven ability to design for complex data models, ambiguity, and multiple user contexts, particularly within specialized or technical domains.
- A strong user-centered mindset with a focus on clarity, usability, and accessibility.
- Comfortable working in a small, cross-functional team and contributing across the product development lifecycle.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain design decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Figma; familiarity with Jira and Adobe Creative Suite is a bonus.
- Fluency in English; proficiency in German is appreciated.
- Curiosity about the arts, digital humanities, or cultural heritage is welcome.
- You share our values (listed below) and work in accordance with them.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and work in an autonomous team with a high degree of creative freedom
- A collaborative and open company culture that values diversity and work-life balance among our talented colleagues from all over the world
- Discounted public transport ticket (Deutschlandticket) or Urban Sports Club membership
- Opportunities for professional development and career growth
- A pleasant office space in Berlin Kreuzberg/Mitte with great coffee, one fixed in-office day per week, and flexibility to work from home.
About NavigatingArt
In 2021, a group of art historians and developers recognized the potential of new technologies to ease the creation of digital catalogues raisonnés and archives for global audiences. NavigatingArt has since applied digital strategies to meet the needs of institutions, increasing the availability of historical materials and lowering the barrier to comprehensive research. It became a nonprofit organization in 2024, supported by the Hasso Plattner Foundation, thereby aligning its legal status with its mission to protect and promote cultural heritage.
Our values
- Integrity : transparency, authenticity, and responsibility are at the fore of everything we do.
- Expertise : we grow personally and professionally while learning from mistakes and striving for excellence.
- Durability : we prioritize longevity in the products and materials we create in an effort to do things only once — even when this emphasis requires slow thinking and development.
- Collaboration : we work across teams to overcome complex challenges that require everyone’s contribution, not just those at the top.
NavigatingArt is committed to providing a friendly and safe environment for everyone who works here or with us, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion (or lack thereof), and art preferences.
