The Banking Team at Shine
The Banking domain is responsible for accounts, payments, cards, ledger, compliance flows, and the architecture that powers all financial operations. The mission: build a single, unified banking experience across four markets, on a new in-house core banking engine.
Your Role
We are looking for a Area Engineering Manager who combines strong leadership with the ability to be hands-on when needed.
In this role, you will lead multiple teams within the Banking domain while also directly managing newly formed or project-based teams (such as Lending or market-specific initiatives). You will play a key role in shaping team structures, driving delivery, and supporting the evolution of our banking platform.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building new areas from the ground up , while also ensuring alignment and execution across existing teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and support 4 engineering teams through their Engineering Managers
Act as a direct Engineering Manager for newly formed or project teams (e.g., Lending, DK project) until they scale and require dedicated leadership
Contribute to architectural and technical decisions across core banking systems (ledger, payments, KYC/AML, reconciliation, etc.)
Partner closely with Product, Design, Compliance, Risk, and Operations
Drive clarity, prioritization, and strong execution across teams
Be hands-on when needed, especially in early-stage initiatives, to help teams move forward
Support hiring, team structuring, and headcount planning
Foster a collaborative and high-performing engineering culture
Ensure systems meet reliability, scalability, and regulatory requirements
Your First 6–12 Months
Build strong relationships with Engineering Managers and teams across Banking
Ensure alignment and execution across the teams you support
Launch and directly manage new initiatives or project teams (e.g., Lending, DK project)
Define team structures and support hiring as new areas grow
Contribute to the evolution of the core banking platform
Improve delivery predictability and operational excellence
Support the integration of new domains into the broader Banking ecosystem
About You
You are a pragmatic leader who can balance leading leaders with hands-on involvement when needed.
You are comfortable navigating ambiguity, building new teams or projects from scratch, and creating structure as things scale.
Must-Have Experience
Experience as a Area Engineering Manager ** or similar role , managing multiple teams or managers
Background in fintech, banking, or complex backend systems
Strong technical foundation with the ability to contribute to architectural discussions
Experience setting up or scaling new teams, projects, or domains
Ability to balance execution, leadership, and hands-on support
Strong stakeholder management skills across Product and business teams
Experience working in multi-country, distributed environments
Fluent in English
Nice to Have
Experience with lending products or market launches
Familiarity with European regulatory frameworks (PSD2, AML/KYC, SEPA)
Experience with accounting, invoicing, or adjacent financial domains
